At a special weekday matinee, there were squeals of delight and applause from more than 900 students from area schools who packed the gym for an afternoon presentation of the musical. Attending where students from ten schools: Christ the King (Gretna), Holy Name of Jesus (New Orleans), Homer A. Plessy (New Orleans), Immaculate Conception (Marrero), Lynn Oaks (St. Bernard), St. Christopher (Metairie), St. Peter (Reserve), St. Rita (Harahan), St. Rita (New Orleans), and St. Rosalie (Harvey). Recently, the sophomore class participated in their Sophomore Retreat. This day of reflection began with a talk by Sr. Tracey Matthia Dugas, a Daughter of St. Paul, on ‘What does it mean to be a daughter of God?’

Students enjoyed group talks and activities focused on discovering beauty, appreciating the gift that God created them to be, and learning how to connect with God through music and Scripture. During one group activity, students made Psalm 23 bracelets for the residents of Eden House.

Fr. Scott Daniels, O.P. joined the students and their parents for mid day Mass. At the end of the day, sophomores gathered together joyfully to share their inspirations and insights. Special thanks to all of the faculty and junior and senior group leaders who contributed to making the day a huge success.

Her peers recognized Barrett as a woman who instills Christian moral values while urging the practice of ethical behaviors as demonstrated through her dedication to family, public service or career. She earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame, where she was recognized with the highest honors awarded and served as executive editor of Notre Dame Law Review. Barrett clerked for Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court. As an associate at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin in Washington, D.C., she litigated constitutional, criminal, and commercial cases in both trial and appellate courts.

From 2010-2016, Barrett served by appointment of the Chief Justice on the Advisory Committee for the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure. She serves on the faculty of Notre Dame’s Law School. In November 2017, she was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Waters’ affiliation with the LSU Catholic Center increased her involvement in the Catholic Church, evangelization, and faith formation. She served the homeless, taught CCD, became a lector, and served on the Parish Council of St. George Church in Baton Rouge. Currently residing in Houston, she and her friend Alicia Goodwin, co-founded the Marian Servants of the Incarnate Wisdom®. At St. Rose of Lima Parish, she serves as Spiritual Director, Healing Prayer Minister, Lector, and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Eucharist.  Gina and her husband, Matt Waters, have three children and continue to live in Houston.

Alstroemeria flower dissection, creating an ultraviolet bead bracelet, leaf rubbing, and using the Dichotomous Key Leaf were among the activities at the Domini-Science event on April 20. At the welcome, the Dominican Robotics team demonstrated their robots and Domini-Scientists took a turn at the controls.

During a scavenger hunt, Domini-Scientists explored the school grounds and its offering of trees and bushes to identify the unique design of leaves. The ultraviolet bead bracelet sparked discussion on ultraviolet radiation, dangers of UV rays and the importance of sunscreen.

SynDaver™ Surgery Surprises

In science teacher Ms. Anjel Guitroz’s  classroom, junior and seniors had two surprises today. Instead of reviewing upcoming exams in the human anatomy class, their teacher instructed them to put on surgical gloves, masks and caps. A “patient” needed emergency surgery and they were going to learn how to do a surgeon’s knot and a running loop stitch. The patient was the SynDaver™ Surgical Model. As they gathered around the patient, Ms. Guitroz reminded them, “You have to be comfortable with the orientation of the needle.”

Students were improving with practice when two visitors arrived. Seminarians Jeff Merritt and Dr. Davis Ahimbisibwe had heard about the SynDaver and wanted to see its use in a classroom setting. Merritt was in his second year of medical school at Tulane University before transferring to Notre Dame Seminary. Dr. Davis was a physician in Uganda, but also had a calling.

Recounting some of the cases he handled in his medical practice, Dr. Davis shared, “I have seen the hand of God so much in my practice, that I would always advise my patients to pray.” He and Merritt shared that communication is critical in medicine and priesthood. Merritt noted that listening and observing go hand-in-hand. “We had a medical treatment card that we gave to our patients,” shared Dr. Davis. “It read – We Treat, But God Heals.”

The SynDaver made its debut in 2015 at St. Mary’s Dominican High School, making it the first high school in the United States to have one. Used in Human Anatomy classes, it is a 3D jigsaw body puzzle with every muscle, bone, vascular component and organs removable and replaceable. Guitroz received suture training from George B. Morris IV, MD, Chairman of OB/GYN at Ochsner Baptist.

At the Division I state semifinal game held in Sulphur this past weekend, fourth-seeded Dominican toppled defending state champion Mount Carmel 2-1. Dominican’s two-run home run in the 6th-inning marked a historic upset, “one of the greatest upsets in the 46-year history of the LHSAA softball tournament,” wrote Pat Mashburn for Times-Picayune/nola.com.

After the win, Dominican took on second-seeded John Curtis in the championship game. The team fought hard to hold on to a 4-run lead, but fell with a 7-5 loss. However, they brought home the Softball State Runner Up title and memories for the history books and a lifetime.

Congratulations to the team, head coach Dawn Benoit, assistant coaches Jody Savoie and Chris Hernandez, and trainer Emily Jaeger.

April 30 through May 4, seniors celebrated their final week of class with several observances and traditions. Early in the week they wore t-shirts indicating their college choice for next fall. On Friday, their last day, seniors enjoyed snowballs during lunch, took their best aim in tossing uniforms and shoes in the recycle bin, and gathered at the flag pole for the Senior Countdown. Their “Shoe Photo” featured circles of shoes from the 183 members of the Class of 2018.

Giving a nod to their alma mater song that celebrates “Saints and sages, named enrolled,” seniors autographed a pillar inside the school’s Veritas Tower. During construction of the Veritas Tower, the Class of 2015 signed a piling before its installation beneath the tower. The alumnae directory and other symbols reflecting the school’s history are also under the tower’s base.
