At the annual Youth Leadership Celebration and Awards presentation held at St. Louis Cathedral, 14 Dominican students were among the honorees recognized for their commitment to their parishes in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. There were 39 parish youth ministries represented, with 102 teenagers receiving Outstanding Parish Youth Awards. The national St. Timothy Award for leadership, at both the parish and archdiocesan levels, was presented to 15 high school students.

Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond said, “It is always encouraging to witness the joy with which these young women and men share their faith with their families and friends. It gives me great hope for our Church!”

Abby Hassinger received the Matt Hill Award, given annually by the Catholic Youth & Young Adult Ministry Office of the Archdiocese of New Orleans to a young man and a young woman who have excelled in the Catholic Youth & Young Adult Ministry Athletic Leagues and also exhibited leadership qualities and a desire to serve others. Described as more than simply an athletic award, the young people who are honored are well-rounded members of their church parishes who witness to the gospel by their lives.

Among the Outstanding Youth Award honorees were Halle Briede, Saheba Cuccia, Shannon Daly, Alexis Daugherty, Rose Doskey, Abby Hassinger, Chloe Lemoine, Morgan Muscarello, Emily Piglia, and Meghan Rotolo. The award recognizes the honorees’ leadership and service in their Church parish.

Halle Briede, Emma Duckworth and Lucy Hood were among the recipients of The St. Timothy Award, the highest award the Archdiocese of New Orleans can bestow upon a young person. The national award recognizes, on a diocesan level, outstanding youth who exemplify Christian service, Catholic leadership, and good moral standards. The youth who receive this award are not only outstanding in their church parish, but also in the larger archdiocesan community. These individuals have displayed high ideals and have grown spiritually while offering their time and talents in the service of the church parish and the community at large.

Abigail Haydel ’18

There is a saying that stuck with me when I was becoming a Eucharist Minister, and I wanted to share this phrase with the whole student body so all of you can apply it to your daily lives. Listen to these words carefully: “Talk to God like He is your best friend.” When I heard these words, I immediately starting thinking – that’s it, that is how I can pray.

I grew up in a family that was centered on faith, we prayed as a family and I was taught how to pray by myself. Although, I never understood how God would talk back to me or how my prayers would ever be answered. Praying for me used to feel like a one-sided conversation of me asking for simple things, because that is what I thought praying consisted of. Now when I pray I feel a connection and a presence listening to me while I pour out my heart as I talk to my best friend, God. I bet all of you can talk to your best friend for hours and hours about your life, your desires, your dreams, and your hardships. However, your best friend would not be your best friend if you did not talk to him or her or spend time with him or her. Praying in this way might be difficult for some people to just sit in peace and pour out their heart to God, but remember that you could never do anything to lose His love. God also longs for us to have a relationship with Him, and this relationship is the most fulfilling because He has answers that no one else has or even could understand. He created us in His image and likeness and having that faithful connection with Him will help us live out His plan for our lives.

Seniors, we are about to embark on a brand-new journey, and we will be leaving this “Catholic Bubble” of Dominican. This is not a bad thing, but your life will now be filled with people of different morals and beliefs, no matter where you go to college.  God is going to guide you to defend His name and stand up for what you believe in. He wants you to experience new surroundings, but make sure to follow the path God has made for you by continuing your relationship with Him. Many of you might be confused on what to major in, or if you chose the right college, but God will not just lay everything out on the table for you. He wants you to get to know yourselves and Him through the different experiences you go through in life. Just like your best friend, God doesn’t want you to be unhappy and even when you experience disappointments along the way remember that ultimately, he wants the best for you. God is here to guide you through this journey called life. I ask all of you; always remain close to God, because He is your best friend. He wants the best for you and knows what will make you happy. Also, it is okay to be vulnerable; not to be okay. He wants to hear everything on your mind and heart, because He wants to heal you with His love and guide you with His wisdom. With His presence in your life, you will never be alone, and He will always be there to hold your hand. Remember not to forget Him, even when you feel on top of the world, but embrace His goodness and His name; because of Him, true happiness is possible. I hope that all of you walk the path that He paved for you and make your heart His everlasting home.

Juniors Marian Boyd and Julia Cazabon are recipients of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) 2018 Achievement Award in Writing.

They are the only students from Louisiana that were honored nationally for their academic achievements in writing. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. US accredited schools in the United States, Canada, Virgin Islands and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students who submit two writings – best (considered the best by the student) and themed (a writing based on the topic developed the Achievement Awards Committee). Teams of teachers across the nation judge entries.

Across the country, 461 juniors were nominated by their English teachers. Of that number, 226 received Certificates for Superior Writing. This school term, Julia and Marian were students in Ms. Casey Lefante’s English IV Advanced Placement class.

Students in Mr. Ryan Reuter’s 8th and 9th Grades Physical Science classes took a “field trip” to the Music Room to learn more about sound waves where Band and Choir Director Ms. Brenda Castillo demonstrated several music principles such as pitch, resonance, frequency, and interference.  The students also learned about the acoustics of the band room, how speakers operate, and learned about various music instruments. They also played the “vibraphone” and demonstrated transverse and longitudinal waves with hand chimes.
